We are all in a pursuit of wellness – both of the mind and body. Some might be more conscious in their decisions to attain this state of health, however ultimately we all desire it. It’s the reason why so many new year’s resolutions involve diet changes or new exercise plans. Unfortunately, we can inadvertently stack the odds against ourselves by trying to make too many changes at once and then abandon the entire pursuit out of frustration. Today let’s look at one very small change we can make to improve our health: lemon water.
Whether consumed first thing in the morning or during the day, in warm or cold water, lemon water has the following amazing benefits:
Lemons are a great source of vitamin C. Not only is this beneficial for the immune system but Vitamin C also helps with the absorption of iron as well as stimulating collagen production.
There’s more to lemon water than Vitamin C. Powerful electrolytes such as potassium, calcium and magnesium are found in lemons. The cells of your body rely on these electrolytes for optimal functioning.
A soluble fibre, once ingested pectin absorbs water and expands. It, therefore, can provide a feeling of satiety or “fullness” which is why lemon water has been said to support weight loss. As a fibre, pectin also promotes healthy digestion.
Despite its bitter taste, lemons are good alkaline foods. Our body regulates the pH of our bloodstream however stress and consumption of processed foods or drinks can increase the acidity of the body. High levels of acidity have been said to cause deterioration of muscles and bone mass as well as pose other health risks. It is therefore advised to consume foods with alkalizing properties such as lemon water.
Sounds too good to be true but lemons are rich in antioxidants which combat free radicals and thereby slows down the ageing process of our cells.
Joint and muscle pain relief
Starting the day with a large glass of lemon water has been said to help reduce pain associated with diseases such as arthritis. A possible explanation is that lemon water aids the removal of uric acid deposits from joints and soft tissues. Uric acid is a toxic waste product of the body and causes inflammation.
The liver performs the vital role of detoxifying the body and can use a helping hand from time to time. Lemon water is said to stimulate bile production and help break down fats.
Ok, perhaps the fact that there is water in lemon water is what causes the hydrating component- however, the refreshing flavour of lemons definitely helps make the recommended 2.2 litres of water per day more enjoyable.
