Health and wellbeing is a topic that everyone is talking about these days. And for good reason, we only have one life to live and we should do our best to live that life as optimally as possible. Thankfully, much of health and wellbeing is entirely self-dependant and can be drastically improved by simply making a few lifestyle changes. Here are 10 easy changes that you can start today to optimise your health and wellbeing.

1. Move Daily
Movement is vital to our bodies, and today we spend more time than ever sitting and sedentary. Our muscles, vascular system, nervous system, and everything else all require movement to stay healthy. Try to walk 10,000 steps daily as well as doing some simple movement practices like Pilates.

2. Stop Eating Inflammatory Foods
Sugar, artificial sweeteners, vegetable oils, preservative and additives are some of the most damaging compounds to our health. They imbalance hormones, cause inflammation, damage our gut, are devoid of nutrients and alter our bodies cellular metabolism. Try to avoid pre-packaged foods and a lot of restaurant eating as these are often laden in these products.

3. Start Eating Real Whole Foods
Nutrition is the basis of cellular health, down to our DNA. Eating real whole foods that have been raised naturally (either organic or better yet, wild) provides the body with the most optimal nutrition. Stick to fresh unprocessed vegetables and meats plus some fruits, nuts and seeds, along with lots of water, and your body will thank you.

4. Always Get 8 Hours of Sleep
Sleep is one of the most important things for our health and wellbeing. If you are not prioritising sleep, it makes everything else more difficult. Set a schedule for sleep and hold to it. You may have trouble at the beginning but it will become easier the more you do it.

5. Meditate Daily
Meditation is gaining popularity, both in the public and in the scientific literature. Just spending 5-10 minutes daily practising some form of meditation can do wonders for your physical and mental wellbeing.

6. Play and Have Fun
Play is an integral part of mammalian development, and yes that includes humans. However, in modern society, we decide at some point that being an adult means we have to stop playing and having fun. Try to make time to schedule in activities at least once a week where you do something fun and playful. I guarantee you will immediately feel better.

7. Stop Caring What Other People Think
In a world consumed with social media where we are always connected to each other and have images of photoshopped celebrities and perfect lives, it’s important to not lose grasp of reality. The only person’s opinion that should matter is your own. Focus on yourself and doing what makes you happy, not others.

8. Eat Healthy Fats
Fats are essential nutrients and play many important roles in the body. Try to consume fats from high quality sources like avocado, olive oil, coconut oil, cold water fish, butter or ghee, and yes even, animal fats.

9. Learn Something New
Learning new things, either physical or mental, is one of the best things you can do to keep your brain healthy. Learning new things stimulates neuroplasticity, your brain’s ability to adapt and heal. In Zen Buddhism, they believe in ‘Shoshin’ – Beginners Mind, always open to learning and new experiences.

10. Spend Time In Nature
Spending time in nature is one of the easiest and most rejuvenating things we do. The fresh air and natural environment eases our bodies and minds and brings us back to oneness with the world. Try finding a waterfall or fresh water pool to have a dip!
